Arthrodesis of Charcot Knee Using Ilizarov External Fixator



Abstract
Charcot joint is an arthropathy characterised by painless swelling and articular in stability and was first reported by Charcot at 1868, which combined with tabes dorsalis and various origin were reported till recent years.
Treatment of choice of Charcot knee joint is knee arthrodesis but its success rate is 50 ~ 85% and 6 to 9 month period is needed for fixation.
Fixation devices for Charcot knee are dual plate, intramedullary nail, Charnley compression device and exteranl fixator.
The authors could follow up Charcot knee associated with tabes dorsalis before development of bone loss and treated it with Ilizarov external fixator. We remove external fixator at 4.5 months after operation and no complication was occured. We
experienced one case of Charcot knee which was treated with Ilizarov external fixator.
